Lin sat down with a groan.

I am positively exhausted! What a day . . . He shuddered to consider the kinds of pains he was likely to experience later, so he did his best not to ponder it. The place they had selected for their overnight camp was not much more than a wide spot in the trail, but he was grateful for a much needed rest. Easing the pack from his shoulders, he leaned back against a large trunk and closed his eyes. After a few minutes he opened the right one slightly, just to see what had become of his ever-present escorts.

Biix and Paax had settled on a branch above him. The elder sprite wore the same expression of indifference he always wore. Biix looked troubled. Still pouting, no doubt. Lin let himself smile. He knew that the small one’s troubles were not amusing, but he presented an interesting picture: his tiny body sitting in a pose of obvious depression, and even his wings seemed to droop. Lin closed his eye again. He’ll get over it. If he could just learn to contain his curiosity!

Adam noticed Lin sitting with eyes closed, and felt a pang of pity. He knew how exhausting it was being dragged into a situation not of his own making. He hoped Lin would adjust as well as he had.

Aryal had been quite reserved and quiet after her outburst, but the activity of preparing the campsite appeared to have helped her mood. Adam helped her gather firewood, stealing glances and flashing grins at her as he did so. He even managed to get a half-smile in return. She won’t stay angry for too long - I know her well enough to realize that. Adam was hopeful that a night’s rest would return her to her amiable self.

Adam was tempted to use the Rhuvae to start their campfire but, recalling the incident in his room, decided against it. His control was still dubious, and he did not want to be responsible for burning down half the forest. Aryal did the honors with what was, to Adam, entirely too much ease. Her smirk was teasing, but he refused to let her bait him. He pointedly made no comment.

The party was subdued and quiet as they ate. Tamaryn seemed to be in deep thought, barely aware of his surroundings. Lin looked uncomfortable, feeling out of place as he did. And Adam’s thoughts kept roaming from the task ahead to Aryal’s odd behavior. As the last of the daylight faded from the overcast sky, he managed to persuade her to step away from the camp a short distance so they could talk more privately. His night vision was improving for he could just make out her features in the darkness. “Would you like to talk about it”

“About what?”

He frowned at her. “You know.” He waved in the direction of the branch where Biix and Paax perched. “Them. What is it about them that upsets you so?”

A frown of equal intensity creased her smooth brow.
